The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), based on the execution of Clean Up Taiwan Project in past years, continuously promotes sub-projects, “Clean Up Taiwan Multi-tiered Mobilization” and “Cleaning Up Taiwan’s Coastline”. The goal of this year is to enhance the “cleanliness” of the environment by inviting government departments, cities/counties governments, townships/districts, villages, schools, enterprises, and the public to participate for improving living environment and environment sanitation. To make the grading results of cleanliness truly reflect the maintaining circumstances of the environment, the EPA has organized “Creation of Sustainable, High-quality Environmental Sanitation” plan, hoping that the grading result can correspond to the public’s feeling and gradually earn their trust and satisfaction. The main achievement of the project this year is to audit the nationwide cleanliness. By the end of October 2013, 362 townships/cities/districts in the nation has reached the average B grade average scores, a 13% increase compared to the last year, and the standard deviation of multiple mobilization evaluation in all departments has been reduced from 0.65 in 2012 to 0.41 in 2013. The cleanliness has gradually enhanced nationwide, indicating that locals have made endeavors to maintain the environment cleanliness. Particularly in recent years, internationalization has been promoted, leading to sightseeing places and urban areas making efforts for environment protection to enhance Taiwan’s overall city looks, such as coastal cleanup, river course dredging, open area plantation, and streets renovation. During the execution of project plans, some items were observed that should be improved, such as litter, bulk garbage, and small advertisements, above which are considered most serious issues. Different parts of Taiwan have different kind of problems; specifically, the north Taiwan tends to have more litter and cigarette butts, the central Taiwan have more litter and small advertisements, and the south and east Taiwan have more bulk garbage randomly abandoned on spare space or roadsides. We hope in the future counties and cities can focus on priority sites, launching public movement for clean neighborhood to reach the goal of creating the sustainable and healthy environment.
